STUDENT COUNSELING AND CAREER GUIDANCE CENTRE

GENERAL INFORMATION
The university counseling service comprises both a Student Counseling Service and Career Development Centre.

HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED IS OUR MOST IMPORTANT JOB

Getting through university poses many difficult challenges. Many students experience stress due to the adjustments required by their studies and the multiple roles in their lives. Common issues students identify are feeling worried, anxious or depressed, having relationship problems or underachievement in their studies. Counselling is available for supportive or problem-solving assistance for academic, vocational, emotional, personal or social concerns. Counselors help explore these issues and assist students to work toward achieving the goals they have set for themselves. Most students can benefit from seeing a counselor at some point in their university experience. The concept and importance of Counseling Services for an institution play a very vital role in dealing with a student's personal conflicts. A happy young adult makes a happy student.

WHAT HAPPENS IN COUNSELING?
Counselling is not the same as giving advice. Rather, a counselor seeks to help you to focus on and understand more clearly the issues that concern or trouble you. The counselor’s role is to offer support and understanding and to listen and respond in a non-judgmental, non-critical way. S/he will respect your values, choices and lifestyle. S/he will help you explore your feelings and may try to help you discover what lies behind what is troubling you. S/he can help you to make decisions, choices or changes that are right for you.
Most personal, relationship or identity problems can be helped through counseling - this includes anxiety, stress and depression; family and/or relationship difficulties, sexual problems and identity issues. Counselling can also help with other issues such as: adjusting to a new culture, dealing with dilemmas, making difficult decisions or choices, as well as more specific problems such as eating problems or addictions.

WHO WILL BE YOUR COUNSELORS?

The service is managed by Dr. Ali Gohar Shah, Director Students Affairs, who is a senior official and also a teacher of the university. He has the experience of helping people from different backgrounds & cultures. His work is supervised by Dean, Basic Sciences.
He can always take help from other senior teachers for academic problems and being a medical university all psychological or medical problems are referred to the concerned professionals.
