Chandka Medical College (CMC) - Larkana Chandka Medical College, was inaugurated on 20th April 1973 by the then Minister for Health Mr. Abdul Waheed Katpar. At that time there were only two medical colleges in the province of Sindh. It was the earnest need of this area as people had to travel a long distance for health problems to Jamshoro & Karachi. The 1st Principal and Project Director of CMC, was a renowned teacher of the teachers, Prof. Ali Muhammad Ansari.
First batch comprised of 150 students. The college was established in D.C High School, Polytechnic College & Teachers Training College for men. The later was used as boys hostel initially, later on it was converted to girls hostel. Since then the college has developed to its present position both in building and faculty.
The academic block comprises of two lecture halls, laboratories for each department  with aircondition to over come the scorching heat of Larkana. A gigantic  auditorium  hall has been added, which is fully air-conditioned & has a seating capacity of one thousand  persons. A gymnasium for indoor games, mini stadium for out door games is also available.
The college library has three large and one small reading rooms, for under graduate & one for postgraduate students. All are air-conditioned. There are thousands of text books of latest edition on different subjects and a separate section of reference books for teaching staff.
On clinical side there are three complexes of hospitals. Number one, city block comprising of ENT, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Chest Medicine, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Medicine Unit-II, Department of Physiotherapy, Casualty, OPD Block, Blood Bank & Central Laboratory. Number two, the teaching  hospital block comprising of medical unit-I & III surgical units I, II & III and  Department of Nephrourology, which is equipped  with Lithotripter and latest instruments.  The third complex comprising  of Sheikh Zaid Women Hospital with Gynae/Obs: departments; children  hospital & paeds surgery hospital. Children hospital is likely to be upgraded as National Institute of Child Health which will be 1st: ever project of Sindh government.
There is a separate Institute of Nursing in the compound  of Sheikh Zaid Women Hospital. All these complexes have about 1200 beds for indoor cases. These departments are  having well qualified senior as well as junior staff according to the requirement of PMDC.
For diagnostic purpose there are modern laboratories with semi  automatic analyzers in different sections of hospitals which provide routine laboratory facility along with screening  of blood. The laboratory  at college campus provides  facility of special tests like Biopsies, Bone Marrow Examination,  FNACs & Microbiology, culture of various biological fluids. The Radiology department is equipped  with  x-ray facility for routine as well as  specialized  views, eg IVP, Barium studies & myelography;  ultrasound for routine tests as well as for specialized procedure, Echo cardiography & colour Doppler facility. CT scan & MRI are also sanctioned which shall be installed shortly.
Larkana Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy (LINAR) is an excellent  facility  for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients and also teaching of   4th year medical students.
Professor Sikandar Ali Shaikh, Principal & Chairman Academic Council CMC, Larkana took the charge as Principal on 24th November 2004. This college got the following changes & improvements with his untiring efforts.
Deteriorated law & order situation of the campus was improved. Master Planning of CMC & CMC Hospital is near completion. All sections of library have been recently renovated which have about 37000 text books & 11000 reference books with the facilities of latest scientific journals. The library now gives a new look with new furniture, well illuminated halls, all fully air conditioned. The library is opened from 8:00 AM  to 2:00 AM (next day).
Renovation of college campus, departments of Pathology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Community Medicine & Administration block has changed the general look to a great extent. The establishment of new admission cell came into being which was the need of college as it was temporarily located in the hospital, far away from the campus. This cell has been provided with computers & essential staff for smooth running which is supervised by a senior teacher of the college. It was the 1st time that the result of entry test of session 2007-2008 was compiled by the cell. The result was displayed on the website which is another land mark of efforts of newly established IT Department. This IT department has been equipped with latest computers, lap tops, multimedia, projectors, scanner, Printers which are run by existing & newly inducted technical personnel. The IT department is supervised by a senior electronic engineer. A 50 computer digital library has also been established with internet facility for students as well as for teachers.
For the first time computerized student card & employee card has been introduced with various colours for students & employees of CMC, Larkana.
Big efforts were taken to successfully organize 6th, 7th & 8th annual symposia, 7th & 8th convocations, International cardiac conference, ophthalmic symposium & neurology, Psychiatry & Medical Seminars. There is regular publication of CMC, Journal, Sambara Students Magazine and Chandkian Bulletin. Fortnightly clinico pathological conference (CPC) is conducted for faculty & final year MBBS students in which faculty as well as students participate actively.
Various extracurricular activities are regularly organized for providing, recreation, healthy atmosphere, Confidence and Personality building.
Chandka Dental College is also under construction. It is expected to be commissioned during 2009-2010.
Apart form graduate facilities, postgraduate facilities have also been given special attention to facilitate the students of this area. In this context regional center of CPSP has been established. A piece of land is earmarked for its establishment. Temporary setup is established in the college with an air conditioned library with the accommodation of 62 students. This library has text books of worth over one million rupees. There is online facility of down loading about 1000 medical journals. The internet facility is available through HEC. CPSP has also established FCPS I & II examination center. Under the patronage of CPSP various workshops and Basic Medical Science and Advanced Surgical Courses were organized.
Chandka Medical College is recognized by PMDC & General Medical Council (GMC) of England. Some of the departments are recognized by CPSP & LUMHS for FCPS, MCPS, MS (Ophthalmology), DCH, DGO, DCP, DO courses.
The President of Pakistan, during his visit to Larkana on 20th February 2007, announced for the upgradation of Chandka Medical College to the level of Medical University. In this connection whole basic work has been done inclusive of submission of 92-page “Feasibility Form of Higher Education Commission (HEC) for opening up new Medical University” and drafting of proposed Ordinance for the creation of Chandka Medical University. The matter is now pending with the Higher Education Commission.
